Schiller's house
ON REVIEW TOUR IN SCHILLERHAUS
Starting from the market, it is only a few steps to Windischstraße No. 8. There, a panel reminds us that Schiller first lived here between 1799 and 1802. In the Schillerstraße one encounters the later family residence and at the same time one of the most important creations of Friedrich Schiller.
Anyone who wants to visit Schiller's house cannot, like the poet, cross the threshold to the lively esplanade at that time, but has to go through the new museum building from the 1980s. It houses three large exhibition rooms on approximately 400 square meters. What you find here are the changing exhibitions that deal with the literary heritage of the poet. The entire building complex, including the attached museum, is now part of the administrative stock of the Klassik Stiftung Weimar.
When you arrive at the apartment building, his office is in the attic where he completed two of his most famous works: "The Bride of Messina" and "William Tell". On the first floor you can visit the living and sleeping areas of the family. It was the poet's home for just three years, until his early death in 1805.
His wife Charlotte and the children lived more than two decades there as their residence. In contrast to Goethe's house, which he received from the Duke, Schiller had to go into debt for the purchase of his house, but managed to repay the money in the few years and died debt free.
The building is part of the UNESCO World Heritage "Classic Weimar" and houses original legacies from the life of Schiller. It was supplemented with contemporary interiors, so that you as a visitor can gain a good impression of the living and working situation of the poet and life at that time. This is clearly explained to you via an audio guide.
Apart from Schiller's home, there are other interesting theaters in the Thuringian classics that are well worth a visit. For example, you can experience a fascinating journey into the time of the poets and thinkers in nearby Weimarhaus. Here you will get to know the history of the city and its spiritual values in a memorable way.
